How Screen Time Requests Work in iOS 16 Messages
In iOS 16, Apple streamlined parental controls by integrating Screen Time allowance requests directly into the Messages app. Instead of navigating through system alerts or the Settings app, parents and guardians can now receive, evaluate, and approve or deny requests for additional app usage directly within their ongoing iMessage conversations with their children.
How a Request Is Sent
When a child reaches their allocated time limit on an app or website, iOS displays the standard "Time Limit" splash screen. From this screen, the child can tap Ask For More Time. In iOS 16, this presents the option to Send in Messages.
Tapping this option automatically creates an interactive request bubble within the Messages thread between the child and the parent or designated family organizer.
How Parents Manage the Request
Once sent, the request appears inline inside the Messages conversation on the parent's device as a dynamic rich-card message. The parent does not need to leave the conversation or open the Settings app to take action.
Tapping the request bubble reveals the approval options:
- Approve for 15 Minutes
- Approve for an Hour
- Approve All Day
- Don't Approve
Once the parent selects an option, the card immediately updates in the conversation thread to reflect the decision, showing which option was selected.
Synchronization and Requirements
The approval communicates instantly across Apple's Family Sharing network:
- The child's device updates in real time, unlocking the requested app immediately without requiring a passcode entry on the physical device.
- If multiple parents or guardians share administrative privileges in Family Sharing, the message thread updates for all guardians, preventing duplicate or conflicting approvals.
For this feature to function, both the parent and child devices must be running iOS 16 (or later), iPadOS 16, or macOS Ventura, with Family Sharing properly configured and Screen Time management enabled for the child's account.
