How Safari Reader View Persists in iOS 16

In iOS 16, Safari ensures a seamless reading experience by saving Reader View customizations across web pages and browsing sessions. This article explains how your choices for visual themes, font sizes, typography, and automatic activation are retained by Safari's preference architecture, applying either globally or on a per-website basis without requiring repeated manual adjustments.

Global Appearance Preferences

When you open Reader View using the format menu (aA) in the address bar and alter the appearance settings, Safari treats these styling choices as global parameters. This applies to:

  • Background Themes: Switching between White, Sepia, Gray, and Black (Night) themes.
  • Font Selection: Choosing between supported typefaces such as San Francisco, Georgia, New York, Palatino, and Athelas.
  • Text Scaling: Increasing or decreasing the font size.

Once modified on any page, these visual settings are written to Safari's core preference store. Any article opened in Reader View afterward—regardless of the website or domain—automatically inherits this configuration.

Per-Website Automatic Activation

Reader View can be configured to trigger automatically every time you visit specific domains. To persist this behavior across page loads:

  1. Tap the aA icon in the address bar.
  2. Select Website Settings.
  3. Toggle on Use Reader Automatically.

Safari binds this rule directly to the specific host domain (e.g., example.com). Whenever you navigate to a new article or subpage within that domain, Safari detects the Reader-eligible markup and loads the page directly in Reader View without user intervention.

Global Automatic Reader Settings

For full persistence across the entire web, iOS 16 allows automatic Reader activation via system settings:

  1. Open the iOS Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Safari > Reader (under the "Settings for Websites" section).
  3. Enable All Websites.

When enabled, Safari evaluates every visited URL. If the page contains standard editorial layout markup compatible with Safari's Reader engine, it immediately renders the page using your saved typography and theme settings.

Storage and Reset Conditions

These persistence rules are stored locally within the WebKit and Safari preferences system on your device. They remain intact across browser restarts and device reboots.

However, customizations can be affected under specific conditions:

  • Clearing History and Website Data: Removing website data in iOS Settings resets per-site preferences, meaning automatic activation rules for specific domains will need to be re-enabled.
  • Private Browsing Mode: While appearance preferences (fonts and colors) still apply, per-site automatic activation states are isolated and do not modify standard browsing rules.
