How Remind Me Works in iOS 16 Mail

Apple introduced the "Remind Me" feature in the iOS 16 Mail app to help users manage their inboxes by resurfacing emails at a specified date and time. Functioning essentially as a native snooze tool, it ensures critical messages do not get lost in a crowded inbox. When scheduled, the selected email moves back to the top of your inbox at the chosen time, complete with an alert so you can address the message when you are ready.

How to Set a Reminder for an Email

You can schedule a reminder using two straightforward methods within the Mail app:

  1. Swipe Action: In your inbox message list, swipe right on the email you want to postpone and tap Remind Me.
  2. Action Menu: Open the email, tap the Reply button (the curved back-arrow), scroll down, and select Remind Me.

Once selected, Mail presents several preset options:

  • Remind Me in 1 Hour
  • Remind Me Tonight (typically 9:00 PM)
  • Remind Me Tomorrow (typically 8:00 AM)
  • Remind Me Later... (allows you to pick an exact date and time using a calendar and clock)

Where Postponed Emails Are Stored

When you set a reminder, the email does not disappear from your inbox. Instead, iOS 16 automatically generates a dedicated Remind Me smart mailbox in the Mailboxes list. This folder aggregates every email currently set with an active reminder, allowing you to review all scheduled messages in one place without having to hunt through your inbox.

What Happens When the Reminder Triggers

At the scheduled time:

  • The email automatically moves back to the very top of your Inbox, regardless of when it was originally received.
  • iOS delivers a push notification to your lock screen or notification center, depending on your device settings.
  • The email displays a distinct, high-visibility "Remind Me" badge directly on the message preview to highlight that it has resurfaced.

Editing or Canceling a Reminder

If you handle the task early or need more time:

  1. Open the email marked with a reminder.
  2. Tap the Edit button located inside the blue Remind Me banner at the top of the message.
  3. Select a new date and time, or tap Turn Off Remind Me to cancel the reminder completely.
