How Many Times Can You Edit a Message in iOS 16?
With the release of iOS 16, Apple introduced the ability to modify sent texts in the Messages app. A user can edit a single message up to five times within a specific time window. This guide explains the exact limits of this feature, how the edit history works, and what rules apply when modifying sent iMessages.
The Five-Edit Limit
In iOS 16, you are allowed to edit an individual iMessage a maximum of 5 times. Once you have reached this five-edit threshold, the "Edit" option disappears from the pop-up menu, preventing any further changes to that specific text bubble.
Time Restrictions
In addition to the five-edit maximum, Apple enforces a strict time limit:
- You have 15 minutes from the moment the original message is sent to make edits.
- Once the 15-minute window closes, the message is locked permanently, regardless of how many edits you have remaining.
How Edit History Works
Editing a message does not erase previous drafts completely. Both the sender and the recipient can see that the message has been altered:
- A small blue "Edited" label appears directly below the modified message bubble.
- Tapping the "Edited" label reveals a chronological log of all previous edits alongside the original text.
- Because the entire edit history is visible to anyone in the conversation, sensitive information cannot be fully hidden simply by editing it out.
Requirements and Limitations
- iMessage Only: This feature exclusively works for iMessage (blue text bubbles). Standard SMS/MMS messages (green text bubbles) cannot be edited.
- Device Compatibility: Recipients running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, or later will see the inline updates and the edit history. If a recipient is using an older operating system (iOS 15 or earlier), each edit will be sent as a separate follow-up text reading "Edited to [new message]".
How to Edit a Message
- Touch and hold the sent blue message bubble within 15 minutes of sending it.
- Select Edit from the contextual menu.
- Make your changes in the text field.
- Tap the blue checkmark to confirm and send the revision.
