How Long Deleted Messages Stay in iOS 16

In iOS 16, Apple introduced a "Recently Deleted" section in the Messages app that temporarily holds erased conversations before they are purged forever. Deleted messages and conversations are stored in this folder for 30 days by default, though Apple notes they can sometimes remain for up to 40 days depending on device clean-up cycles. After this time period expires, the messages are permanently deleted and can no longer be recovered.

The Retention Window Explained

When you delete a text thread, SMS, or iMessage in iOS 16, the data does not immediately vanish. Instead, the system moves the entire conversation to the Recently Deleted folder.

  • Standard Window: 30 days.
  • Maximum Window: Up to 40 days.
  • Countdown Display: Next to each conversation in the Recently Deleted list, iOS displays the exact number of days remaining until automatic permanent deletion.

Once the countdown reaches zero, the system automatically overwrites and purges the data from your device storage and iCloud backup.

How to Find and Recover Deleted Messages

You can restore any message before the 30-to-40-day window closes:

  1. Open the Messages app on iOS 16.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-left corner (or tap Filters if you have message filtering enabled).
  3. Select Show Recently Deleted.
  4. Tap the conversation you want to restore.
  5. Tap Recover in the bottom-right corner, then tap Recover Message to confirm.

The restored thread will return to your main Messages inbox in its original chronological position.

How to Permanently Delete Messages Immediately

If you do not want to wait the standard 30 days for a conversation to disappear automatically, you can manually erase it right away:

  1. Open Messages and go to Edit (or Filters).
  2. Tap Show Recently Deleted.
  3. Select the conversation you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete in the bottom-left corner, then confirm the prompt.

Once deleted through this method, the conversation is wiped immediately and cannot be retrieved through the Messages app.
