How iOS 16 Filters Messages from Unknown Senders

Apple’s iOS 16 enhances the Messages app by introducing advanced filtering capabilities designed to organize texts from numbers not saved in your contacts. By leveraging on-device machine learning, the operating system sorts incoming communications from unknown senders into distinct categories, reducing clutter and helping users distinguish between critical alerts, marketing campaigns, and spam.

To enable this feature, users must navigate to Settings > Messages and turn on Filter Unknown Senders. Once activated, the Messages app replaces the standard inbox list with a dedicated filtering menu that separates communications into several specific categories:

All Messages and Known Senders

The top-level views allow users to see their complete history or restrict their view entirely to recognized contacts. The Known Senders tab contains conversations with individuals saved in your Contacts list or numbers you have previously initiated conversations with.

The Unknown Senders Subcategories

Under the Unknown Senders section, iOS 16 organizes incoming SMS and MMS texts into specialized folders based on the content and intent of the message:

  • Transactions: This category automatically captures time-sensitive and operational notifications. Common examples include bank alerts, two-factor authentication codes (OTPs), flight updates, appointment reminders, and delivery tracking information.
  • Promotions: Texts containing commercial offers, coupons, retail discount codes, and marketing blasts are routed directly to this folder, keeping non-urgent promotional material out of the primary view.
  • Junk: Messages identified as potential spam or scams are filtered into the Junk category. iOS 16 allows users to mark these messages as spam, which automatically deletes the text and reports the sender to Apple and participating carriers.

Unread Messages

In addition to sender-based sorting, iOS 16 includes an Unread Messages category at the top of the filter list. This view aggregates all unread texts across both known and unknown categories, ensuring important notifications are not lost among filtered folders.
