How Focus Home Screen Suggestions Work in iOS 16
In iOS 16, Apple expanded Focus mode by allowing users to link dedicated Lock Screens and Home Screen pages to specific Focus states. To streamline this setup, the operating system uses on-device intelligence to generate Home Screen page suggestions tailored to the context of the selected Focus. This guide explains the mechanics behind these automated suggestions and how they are applied during Focus configuration.
The Suggestion Mechanism
When you configure a Focus mode—such as Work, Personal, Fitness, or Sleep—iOS 16 analyzes your app usage, existing widgets, and app categories. Using this on-device data, the system curates Home Screen layouts designed to minimize distractions and elevate relevant tools.
For instance, selecting a Work Focus prompts suggestions featuring productivity apps, calendar widgets, and email clients. Conversely, a Fitness Focus suggests workout trackers, health data widgets, and music streaming apps.
How to Access Suggestions During Setup
You encounter these suggestions while customizing a Focus profile through the following process:
- Open Settings and select Focus.
- Choose an existing Focus (e.g., Work) or create a custom one.
- Scroll to the Customize Screens section.
- Tap Choose beneath the middle preview representing the Home Screen.
Types of Suggested Pages
Upon tapping "Choose," iOS 16 presents two primary categories of options:
- Newly Generated Suggested Pages: iOS automatically builds complete, ready-to-use page layouts at the top of the selection screen. These pages combine relevant apps with appropriate widget stacks tailored specifically to the context of that Focus.
- Existing Home Screen Pages: Below the generated options, iOS lists your current Home Screen pages. The system highlights pages that already contain apps aligned with the active Focus, allowing you to simply toggle existing screens on or off.
Customization and Behavior
Suggested pages are fully editable. If you select an automatically generated suggestion, iOS adds it as an active page tied exclusively to that Focus. You can rearrange icons, swap out widgets, or remove apps just as you would on any standard Home Screen.
When the Focus is engaged, iOS hides non-selected Home Screen pages, displaying only the chosen suggested or existing pages. Once the Focus is turned off, your standard Home Screen layout returns automatically.
