How Apple Watch Mirroring Works in iOS 16

Apple Watch Mirroring is an accessibility feature introduced in iOS 16 and watchOS 9 that enables users to view and fully control their Apple Watch directly from an iPhone screen. By streaming the watch's display to the larger mobile screen, the feature allows individuals with physical or motor disabilities—as well as anyone needing easier access—to navigate watchOS apps, interact with inputs, and utilize specialized iOS assistive tools like Voice Control and Switch Control to operate their wearable.

The Underlying Technology

Apple Watch Mirroring relies on an advanced integration of Apple's Continuity and AirPlay protocols over a secure, direct local connection. When the feature is activated, the iPhone establishes a low-latency, bidirectional stream with the paired Apple Watch using both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The Apple Watch captures its graphical output in real time and streams an interactive video feed directly into a dedicated window on the iPhone. Simultaneously, the iPhone captures all touch inputs, gestures, and button presses, instantly relaying those commands back to the watch's processor to be executed as native actions.

Interactivity and Hardware Emulation

The mirroring interface replicates the entire watchOS experience inside an on-screen Apple Watch frame on the iPhone:

  • Touch and Gestures: Tapping, swiping, or scrolling on the mirrored watch display on the iPhone triggers the exact same response on the Apple Watch itself.
  • Digital Crown and Side Button: The interface includes virtual representations of the Digital Crown and Side Button. Users can tap or drag the digital hardware buttons on the iPhone screen to scroll through lists, invoke the App Switcher, return to the watch face, or activate Siri.
  • Assistive Integration: Because the display is hosted natively on iOS, users can bypass standard touch entirely by using iPhone accessibility tools, such as Voice Control, Switch Control, Head Tracking, or external adaptive accessories, to navigate the watch interface.

System Requirements

To use Apple Watch Mirroring, both devices must meet specific hardware and software prerequisites:

  • An iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
  • An Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, Ultra, or later running watchOS 9 or later (Apple Watch SE and older hardware do not support this feature).
  • Both devices must be signed into the same Apple ID and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.

How to Turn On Apple Watch Mirroring

  1. Open the Settings app on the paired iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Under the Physical and Motor section, select Apple Watch Mirroring.
  4. Toggle the Apple Watch Mirroring switch to the on position.

A window depicting the Apple Watch will appear at the bottom of the iPhone screen, surrounded by a blue outline on the watch itself to indicate that mirroring is currently active. Closing the window on the iPhone immediately terminates the session.
