Hide Email Accounts Using iOS 16 Focus Filters

Apple’s iOS 16 introduced Focus filters, an advanced feature that allows users to customize how specific apps behave depending on their active Focus mode. In the native Mail app, Focus filters let you hide designated email accounts entirely while a specific Focus—such as Work, Personal, or Sleep—is active. This guide explains how Focus filters function to conceal non-relevant inboxes, silence unwanted notifications, and streamline your inbox view to minimize digital distractions.

How Focus Filters Work in Apple Mail

Focus filters function by setting boundaries within supported apps rather than just managing global device notifications. When applied to Apple Mail, a Focus filter restricts the app's interface to display only the email accounts you manually choose for that mode.

Any unselected email accounts are completely hidden from the mailbox list, and incoming notifications, badges, and background fetches for those specific accounts are temporarily silenced. For example, if you enable a "Work" Focus, you can configure the filter to show only your corporate email address, effectively making your personal inboxes invisible until the Focus mode ends.

Setting Up a Mail Focus Filter

To hide specific email accounts using Focus filters, configure the settings through the iOS Focus menu:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
  2. Tap Focus and select the Focus profile you want to customize (such as Work or Personal).
  3. Scroll down to the Focus Filters section and tap Add Filter.
  4. Under the "App Filters" category, select Mail.
  5. Tap Choose to view a list of all email accounts connected to your device.
  6. Check only the accounts you want to see during this Focus mode (leave the accounts you want to hide unchecked).
  7. Tap Done, then tap Add in the top-right corner to save the filter.

Interacting with Hidden Accounts

Once a Focus mode with an active Mail filter is triggered, the Mail app will reflect these changes automatically:

  • Filtered Inbox View: When you launch the Mail app, only the approved email accounts appear under the "Mailboxes" screen. The hidden accounts will not show new message badges or unread counts.
  • Temporary Filter Toggle: At the bottom of the Mail app, a status bar will indicate that a filter is currently applied (e.g., "Filtered by Work Focus"). If you need emergency access to a hidden account without disabling your entire Focus mode, tap Turn Off on this bar to reveal all accounts temporarily.
  • Automation: When the Focus mode turns off—either manually, on a schedule, or via Smart Activation—the hidden accounts and their unread counts will instantly reappear in the Mail app.
