FaceTime Integration in iOS 16 Freeform

Apple’s iOS 16 integrates FaceTime directly into the Freeform app to allow users to brainstorm, sketch, and organize ideas on an infinite canvas while communicating in real time. By leveraging SharePlay and built-in collaboration controls, users can launch audio or video calls straight from an active board, view teammates in floating Picture-in-Picture windows, and track edits as they happen without switching between apps.

Launching FaceTime Directly from a Canvas

Freeform eliminates the need to manually initiate a call before sharing a workspace. When you open a board and tap the Share or Collaborate icon in the top toolbar, you can invite participants via Messages or initiate a FaceTime audio or video call directly from the menu. If a board is already shared, tapping the active collaboration icon displays the participants and includes a dedicated FaceTime button, allowing you to instantly dial everyone currently working on the canvas.

Picture-in-Picture and In-App Video

Once a FaceTime call starts, the video feed transitions into a floating Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window over the Freeform canvas. This overlay can be moved, resized, or minimized to the side of the screen, ensuring that facial expressions and non-verbal cues remain visible without blocking the workspace. Users can continue sketching with Apple Pencil, inserting media, adding sticky notes, and managing shapes while speaking with their team.

Real-Time Synchronization via SharePlay

The synchronization between Freeform and FaceTime is powered by Apple’s SharePlay framework. When participants are connected:

  • Live Cursors: Each user’s position and actions are highlighted in real time, with individual participant indicators showing who is modifying a specific item.
  • Follow Along Feature: Tapping on a collaborator’s avatar zooms your view directly to their location on the board, allowing one person to present or guide the group through specific sections of the canvas.
  • Instant Updates: Text entries, drawings, files, and layout shifts populate across all connected devices with minimal latency.

Requirements and Ecosystem Support

To use FaceTime collaboration within Freeform, all participants must be running iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, or macOS Ventura 13.1 or later, with iCloud Drive enabled for Freeform synchronization. The integration works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, enabling mixed-device teams to collaborate seamlessly within the Apple ecosystem.
