Customize Undo Send Delay in iOS 16 Mail
Apple introduced the ability to unsend emails in the native Mail app with iOS 16, providing a safety net for typos, missing attachments, or accidental sends. By default, the app provides a short window to recall an email, but you can customize this delay duration to better fit your needs or turn it off entirely directly through your iPhone settings.
Available Delay Durations
In iOS 16, the default delay for Undo Send is 10 seconds. Apple allows you to choose from four distinct options:
- Off: Emails send immediately with no option to recall them.
- 10 Seconds: The default delay window.
- 20 Seconds: Provides extra time to review your action.
- 30 Seconds: The maximum window available to recall a message.
How to Change the Undo Send Delay
To adjust the timing window on your iPhone running iOS 16, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Mail.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the Mail settings menu to locate the Sending section.
- Tap Undo Send Delay.
- Select your preferred duration: Off, 10 Seconds, 20 Seconds, or 30 Seconds.
Once selected, your preference takes effect immediately.
How Undo Send Works in Practice
When you send an email in the Mail app with a delay configured, an Undo Send option will appear in blue text at the bottom of your inbox view. Tapping it within your chosen timeframe cancels the transmission and returns you directly to the compose screen, allowing you to edit the message or delete the draft before sending it again. If the timer expires, the email is officially dispatched to the recipient's server and can no longer be retrieved.
