Customize Caption Size and Background in iOS 16

Apple’s iOS 16 includes robust accessibility settings that allow users to alter the appearance of subtitles and closed captions across system apps and supported third-party video players. By navigating the accessibility menu, you can create custom caption profiles to modify the font size for enhanced legibility and adjust the background color and opacity to ensure captions remain readable against varying video scenes.

Accessing Caption Settings

To begin customizing captions, open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 16 and follow these steps:

  1. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  2. Under the "Hearing" section, select Subtitles & Captioning.
  3. Tap Style to view default styles or create a new one.
  4. Select Create New Style… to build a personalized configuration.

Customizing Text Size

Once inside the style editor, you can adjust the physical dimensions of the caption text to suit your vision needs:

  1. Tap Size under the "Text" section.
  2. Choose from five preset sizes: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, or Extra Large.
  3. Return to the style menu and check the Video Overrides setting. If enabled, the video source can dictate font size; toggle this off to ensure your custom text size is always enforced.

Customizing Caption Background

Modifying the background improves contrast, making words stand out regardless of the video's lighting or color palette:

  1. Under the "Background" section, tap Color. Choose from presets such as Black, White, Yellow, Green, or Blue.
  2. Return to the previous screen and tap Opacity. Select an opacity percentage ranging from 0% (fully transparent) to 100% (solid opaque), with 25%, 50%, and 75% serving as semi-transparent alternatives.
  3. Toggle off Video Overrides for both color and opacity to prevent streaming apps from replacing your selected background styling with their default looks.

Additional Contrast Controls

For further visual clarity, iOS 16 provides advanced background options beneath the primary background settings:

  • Text Highlight: Adds a distinct colored block directly behind individual characters rather than the entire caption box.
  • Window Color and Opacity: Creates a larger bounding box behind the entire caption block, providing a secondary layer of contrast against bright or busy video backgrounds.

After making adjustments, preview the changes in the sample box at the top of the screen. Tap Save in the top-right corner to store your profile, and ensure a checkmark appears next to your new style in the list so it serves as the active system preset.
