Custom Vibration Alerts for Callers in iOS 16
Custom vibration alerts in iOS 16 allow users to identify incoming callers entirely through touch, without relying on ringtones or looking at the screen. By assigning standard or custom-made haptic patterns to individual contacts, your iPhone communicates who is reaching out even when the device is set to silent. This guide explains how this feature functions and provides the exact steps to configure personalized vibrations for specific contacts.
How Custom Vibrations Work
In iOS 16, the Taptic Engine generates distinct haptic pulses based on rhythmic patterns. When assigned at the contact level, these unique vibrations override the system-wide default ringtone vibration whenever that specific contact calls. Users can choose from Apple's pre-installed patterns or tap out their own custom rhythm on the screen to represent a specific person, such as a spouse, child, or manager.
Assigning a Vibration to a Specific Contact
To set a distinct vibration for an individual caller:
- Open the Contacts app (or the Phone app and select the Contacts tab).
- Tap the contact you want to customize.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap Ringtone.
- Tap Vibration at the top of the menu.
- Select a pre-set vibration from the Standard list (such as Heartbeat, Symphony, or Staccato).
- Tap Ringtone in the upper left, then tap Done to save the changes.
Creating a Unique Custom Vibration
If the built-in patterns are not distinct enough, iOS 16 lets you record your own pattern:
- Follow the steps above to reach the Vibration menu for your chosen contact.
- Under the Custom section, tap Create New Vibration.
- Tap the screen to create a haptic rhythm. Pressing and holding creates a sustained vibration, while quick taps create short pulses.
- Tap Stop in the bottom-right corner when finished.
- Tap Play to preview your pattern, or tap Record to try again.
- Tap Save in the top-right corner, name the vibration pattern, and tap Save again.
- Confirm that your new vibration is checked, then exit the menu and save the contact.
Once saved, your iPhone will play that exact tactile pattern only when that specific contact calls, ensuring discreet and immediate caller recognition.
