CarPlay Multi-Stop Maps Navigation in iOS 16
Apple introduced multi-stop routing to Apple Maps with the release of iOS 16, allowing drivers to plan complex trips with up to 15 stops on an iPhone and access them directly on their vehicle's dashboard. This feature seamlessly syncs intermediate destinations to Apple CarPlay, displaying turn-by-turn guidance for each leg of the journey, updating real-time travel estimates, and enabling drivers to manage or add stops using voice commands or the in-car touchscreen.
Route Planning and Syncing
Multi-stop routes are primarily configured on the iPhone before connecting to the car. Drivers can search for a final destination in Apple Maps, tap "Add Stop," and arrange up to 15 locations in sequence. Once the iPhone connects to CarPlay—either via USB or wirelessly—the entire planned itinerary automatically appears on the vehicle's display, ready for navigation without requiring re-entry.
On-Screen Display and Turn-by-Turn Guidance
During active navigation, CarPlay presents the multi-stop journey clearly to avoid cluttering the interface:
- Next-Stop Focus: The main navigation card prioritizes the immediate upcoming destination, showing the arrival time (ETA), remaining distance, and travel duration specifically for that leg of the trip.
- Turn-by-Turn Prompts: Visual and voice cues guide the driver exclusively toward the next waypoint.
- Automatic Progression: When you arrive at a waypoint, CarPlay marks the stop as complete and automatically recalculates the route to the next destination in line without requiring manual intervention.
Adding Stops on the Go
CarPlay in iOS 16 also allows drivers to introduce new stops dynamically while driving:
- Touchscreen Selection: Tapping the route card reveals an "Add Stop" button. This brings up quick-access categories such as Gas Stations, Fast Food, Coffee, and Parking. Selecting an option displays nearby locations along the current route, which can be appended as intermediate waypoints.
- Siri Integration: Drivers can keep their eyes on the road by using voice commands, such as "Hey Siri, add a coffee stop to my route." Siri suggests nearby options, and confirming a choice inserts the stop into the active navigation path.
Route Overview and Management
Drivers can inspect the full journey at any time by tapping the route overview button on the CarPlay screen. This view displays the entire map path along with a sequential list of all remaining stops. If a stop becomes unnecessary, drivers can delete it from the list directly through CarPlay or via the connected iPhone, prompting the system to immediately update the route to the subsequent waypoint.
