Can You Edit or Unsend SMS in iOS 16 Messages?
With the release of iOS 16, Apple introduced the ability to edit and unsend texts in the Messages app, leading many users to wonder if this functionality applies to standard SMS text messages. The short answer is no: these features are strictly limited to Apple's proprietary iMessage service (blue bubbles) and do not work for standard SMS or MMS messages (green bubbles). This guide explains why SMS messages cannot be altered after sending, how to distinguish them from iMessages, and how the feature functions for supported conversations.
Why SMS Messages Cannot Be Edited or Unsent
Standard SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) rely on cellular carrier networks rather than Apple's servers. Once you press send on an SMS text, the data is immediately transferred to your mobile carrier and routed directly to the recipient's phone.
Because SMS is an open, universal standard established decades ago, Apple does not have control over the underlying infrastructure or the recipient's device. As a result, an SMS cannot be recalled, deleted from the recipient's inbox, or modified after it has left your device.
How to Tell If a Message Is SMS or iMessage
You can easily identify whether a conversation supports editing and unsending by looking at the color of the message bubbles:
- Green Bubbles: These are standard SMS/MMS messages sent over a cellular network to non-Apple devices (such as Android phones) or when iMessage is unavailable. These messages cannot be edited or unsent.
- Blue Bubbles: These are iMessages sent over Wi-Fi or cellular data between Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch). These messages can be edited or unsent under specific conditions.
If you touch and hold a green bubble in the Messages app, the contextual menu will only show options like "Copy," "Translate," and "More..."—the options to "Edit" or "Undo Send" will not appear.
How Editing and Unsending Works for iMessage
For messages sent through iMessage (blue bubbles), iOS 16 provides specific time windows and rules:
- Undo Send: You can retract an iMessage up to 2 minutes after sending it. Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send. The message will disappear from both devices.
- Edit Message: You can edit an iMessage up to 15 minutes after sending it. Touch and hold the message bubble, tap Edit, make your corrections, and tap the blue checkmark. You can edit a single message up to five times, and the recipient can tap "Edited" to view the revision history.
Both features require the recipient to be running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, or later. If the recipient is on an older operating system, unsent messages will remain visible, and edited messages will arrive as a second text stating the revised content.
