Auto-Reload Transit Card in iOS 16 Wallet

In iOS 16, Apple introduced an integrated auto-reload feature for transit cards within the Apple Wallet app, removing the need to rely on third-party transit agency apps for balance top-ups. This guide explains how transit card auto-reload works, how to configure the feature directly on your iPhone, and what requirements must be met to ensure uninterrupted transit access.

How Auto-Reload Works

The auto-reload mechanism operates through a simple threshold trigger. You establish a minimum balance threshold (the lowest amount your card can reach before reloading) and an auto-reload amount (the specific balance added each time). When your transit card balance drops below your chosen minimum, Apple Wallet automatically initiates a charge to your designated Apple Pay debit or credit card to replenish the funds.

How to Set Up Auto-Reload in iOS 16

To enable auto-reload on a supported transit card, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the transit card you want to configure.
  3. Tap the More button (the three dots in the top-right corner), then select Card Details.
  4. Tap Auto-Reload (or Card Balance depending on your region).
  5. Turn on the Auto-Reload toggle.
  6. Set the Minimum Balance that will trigger the reload.
  7. Set the Amount to add each time the card reloads.
  8. Select the payment card you want to use from your Apple Pay options.
  9. Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode to confirm the setup.

Managing or Disabling Auto-Reload

You can modify the reload thresholds or turn off the feature at any time:

  1. Navigate to your transit card in the Wallet app.
  2. Open Card Details and select Auto-Reload.
  3. Adjust the threshold amounts, select a different payment card, or toggle the Auto-Reload switch off.
  4. Confirm changes with your device authentication.

Requirements and Limitations

  • Agency Support: Auto-reload via Apple Wallet depends on the transit authority's integration with Apple Pay. While major transit networks (such as MTA in New York, Suica/Pasmo in Japan, and SmarTrip in Washington, D.C.) support seamless integration, some regional cards may still require managing balance top-ups through the transit authority's dedicated app.
  • Payment Method: The transaction requires a valid, active credit or debit card registered within Apple Wallet with sufficient available funds.
  • Network Connectivity: While the transit card can be tapped offline using Express Transit mode, processing the auto-reload payment requires a cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.
