Add Transit Cards in iOS 16 Maps Route Planner
Apple Maps in iOS 16 streamlines public transportation navigation by integrating transit fares and Apple Wallet directly into the route planning interface. Commuters can view the exact cost of their journey, see when their current card balance is low, and add or reload transit cards without leaving the Maps app. This guide explains how to quickly set up and fund a transit card while planning your trip.
Prerequisites
To add a transit card directly within Maps, you must have an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, an active Apple ID signed into iCloud, and at least one payment method already linked to Apple Pay.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open Apple Maps: Launch the Maps app on your iPhone.
- Search for Your Destination: Enter the location you wish to reach in the search bar.
- Select Transit Mode: Tap the Directions button, then select the Transit icon (represented by a bus or train) to view public transportation routes.
- Select Your Preferred Route: Tap on the route you want to take. The detailed route card will display the estimated travel time, transfers, and total fare.
- Locate the Transit Card Prompt: If the route requires a supported transit card and you do not have one in your Apple Wallet—or if your existing card balance is insufficient—a prompt will appear directly below the fare information indicating that a card is required or that funds are low.
- Tap to Add or Reload: Select the prompt, typically labeled Add Card or showing the specific agency name (such as Clipper, SmarTrip, or TAP).
- Complete the Transaction: Choose the amount you want to add or purchase a new digital card, then confirm the payment using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode via Apple Pay.
Once the payment is confirmed, the card is instantly added to your Apple Wallet and linked to Express Mode if supported, allowing you to tap and ride through transit gates immediately.
