Wind Direction in iOS 15 Weather App

With the release of iOS 15, Apple completely overhauled its native Weather app, transforming how atmospheric data is communicated to users. The update replaced plain-text statistics with dynamic, modular graphical elements, introducing a dedicated compass rose card and animated visual map layers specifically designed to make wind direction and speed instantly recognizable.

Prior to iOS 15, wind data was relegated to a simple text line in a basic metrics grid, stating only the speed and abbreviation of the direction (such as "NNW 9 mph"). In iOS 15, this was replaced with an interactive modular tile dominated by a circular compass interface.

The redesigned wind tile features a clean compass rose marked with cardinal directions (N, E, S, and W). Within this dial, an intuitive arrow points directly along the bearing of the wind, indicating the exact path of the airflow. The center and perimeter of the compass clearly display the current wind speed, predominant direction, and peak gust measurements, eliminating the need to decipher text-only abbreviations.

Additionally, iOS 15 introduced full-screen, high-resolution weather maps that extend wind visualization beyond the local metric card. Users can view dynamic, fluid-particle animations that show wind patterns and trajectories moving across regional landscapes in real time, offering both micro-level directional bearings and macro-level airflow perspectives.
