Voice Memos Updates in iOS 15

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced targeted quality-of-life enhancements to the native Voice Memos app to improve playback efficiency and audio management. This update focused on saving users time during playback by introducing native playback speed controls and an automated tool to eliminate pauses, making the app significantly more useful for students, journalists, and professionals.

Variable Playback Speed

In iOS 15, Apple added the ability to adjust playback speed directly within the app. Users can change the listening pace from 0.5x (half speed) up to 2.0x (double speed).

  • Slower Playback (0.5x): Useful for transcribing interviews, analyzing details, or deciphering fast speech.
  • Faster Playback (up to 2.0x): Ideal for quickly reviewing long lectures, meetings, or personal notes without losing comprehension.

Skip Silence

The "Skip Silence" feature uses on-device machine learning to detect dead air and gaps in audio. When enabled:

  • The app automatically skips over pauses, silent breaks, and hesitations during playback.
  • Total playback duration is reduced without cutting off actual spoken words or changing the pitch of the speaker's voice.
  • It works seamlessly alongside speed adjustments for faster overall listening.

How to Access the iOS 15 Controls

The new tools are housed in a dedicated playback settings menu:

  1. Open the Voice Memos app.
  2. Select any recorded memo.
  3. Tap the Options icon (the three adjustment sliders) on the left side of the playback interface.
  4. Adjust the Playback Speed slider to the desired rate, or toggle Skip Silence to the on position.

Enhanced Interface Consistency

Alongside these playback tools, Apple standardized the playback settings menu, grouping the speed slider, Skip Silence toggle, and the previously introduced "Enhance Recording" feature into one central panel. This unified interface makes it simple to optimize audio clarity and listening speed simultaneously.
