Voice Memos Playback Speed Features in iOS 15

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced significant playback control updates to the native Voice Memos app, enabling users to customize how they listen to their audio recordings. The update added a dedicated playback settings menu featuring an adjustable playback speed slider, a new Skip Silence toggle, and reorganized audio enhancement tools, making it much easier to review lectures, interviews, and personal notes efficiently.

Dedicated Playback Settings Menu

Prior to iOS 15, the Voice Memos app offered limited interaction during playback. iOS 15 introduced a dedicated playback options button—represented by an icon with three horizontal adjustment sliders—located directly beneath the waveform on any selected recording. Tapping this icon opens a card containing all audio modification tools in one unified interface.

Variable Playback Speed Slider

The core update to Voice Memos playback in iOS 15 is the fine-tuned speed control. Users are no longer restricted to standard 1.0x playback:

  • Speed Range: A horizontal slider allows users to adjust playback speed anywhere from slower speeds (down to 0.5x) to faster speeds (up to 2.0x).
  • Visual Indicators: The slider features a turtle icon on the far left to represent slower audio and a hare icon on the far right to represent accelerated audio.
  • Real-Time Adjustment: Moving the slider adjusts the audio tempo immediately without drastically distorting the speaker's vocal pitch, allowing for quick scanning of long audio files or careful transcription of fast speech.

The Skip Silence Toggle

Alongside variable speed control, iOS 15 introduced the "Skip Silence" feature within the same playback settings menu. When enabled:

  • The app automatically analyzes the recording waveform.
  • Pauses, silent gaps, and dead air are skipped seamlessly during playback.
  • The feature can be combined with increased playback speed to significantly reduce the total listening time of raw recordings.

Reorganized Enhance Recording Option

The "Enhance Recording" feature, which reduces background noise and room reverberation, was moved into this new playback controls panel. Grouping playback speed, silence skipping, and noise reduction in one place allows users to optimize voice clarity and review speed simultaneously.

How to Change Playback Speed in iOS 15

  1. Open the Voice Memos app.
  2. Tap on the recording you want to listen to.
  3. Tap the Playback Settings icon (three adjustment lines) on the left side of the playback interface.
  4. Drag the Playback Speed slider left toward the turtle to slow it down, or right toward the hare to speed it up.
  5. Tap the X button to close the menu; the chosen playback settings will apply to your audio playback.
