Voice Isolation Visual Indicators on iOS 15

Apple introduced Voice Isolation in iOS 15 to prioritize the user's voice and block out ambient background noise during supported audio and video calls. When this microphone mode is active, the operating system provides distinct visual indicators in both the status bar and the Control Center to ensure users know their microphone is in use and which audio processing mode is engaged.

The Orange Privacy Dot

Whenever an application accesses the microphone on iOS 15, an orange dot appears in the top-right corner of the screen (in the status bar). This privacy indicator remains visible throughout the call, signaling that your microphone is currently active, regardless of which microphone mode is selected.

The Control Center Mic Mode Tile

Swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen opens the Control Center, where the primary visual indicators for Voice Isolation are displayed:

  • Top Status Pill: At the very top of the Control Center, a prominent status pill shows the application currently using the microphone alongside a Mic Mode button.
  • Active Status Label: When Voice Isolation is turned on, the button explicitly displays the text Voice Isolation alongside an orange microphone icon, confirming that background noise reduction is actively applied.

The Audio Mode Selection Menu

Tapping the "Mic Mode" tile opens the full microphone settings menu. Inside this panel:

  • A checkmark appears next to Voice Isolation to designate it as the current active setting among the three available options (Standard, Voice Isolation, and Wide Spectrum).
  • The Voice Isolation option features a distinct icon showing sound waves focusing directly into a central point, visually representing the isolation of speech from surrounding noise.
