Voice Control Navigation Features in iOS 15

Apple introduced several key accessibility improvements in iOS 15, focusing heavily on enhancing Voice Control to make hands-free device navigation faster, more intuitive, and accessible to a wider global audience. These updates expanded language support, improved cursor placement and text navigation commands, and introduced refined contextual guidance to help users control their devices entirely with their voice.

Granular Text Navigation and Editing Commands

iOS 15 expanded the precision of Voice Control when interacting with text fields. Users gained the ability to navigate through text using more granular verbal instructions, including:

  • Character-by-character navigation: Commands allow users to move the insertion point forward or backward by single characters, words, lines, or paragraphs without relying on the numbered grid overlay.
  • Selection controls: Users can select specific words, phrases, or characters verbally (e.g., "Select previous word" or "Select next sentence") to format or replace text swiftly.
  • Contextual deletion: Enhanced commands enable users to delete exact segments of text, such as "Delete previous character" or "Delete next sentence," reducing dictation errors during document editing or messaging.

Expanded Multilingual Navigation

Prior to iOS 15, Voice Control navigation was limited to select languages, predominantly English. iOS 15 broadened the utility of navigation commands by adding full support for:

  • Mandarin Chinese (China mainland)
  • Cantonese (Hong Kong)
  • French (France)
  • German (Germany)

Users can issue core system navigation commands—such as opening apps, scrolling, swiping, and pressing hardware buttons—natively in these languages.

Custom Vocabulary and Navigation Sync

To improve navigation accuracy, iOS 15 added the ability to import and export custom vocabulary across devices. Users can define custom words, proper nouns, and specific navigational terms that the system might not recognize by default. When saved, these terms sync across iCloud, ensuring that specialized navigational phrases work consistently on both iPhone and iPad.

Dynamic Command Discovery

Navigating unfamiliar interfaces became easier with context-aware command discovery. When users are unsure of what to say, they can prompt Voice Control to display a dynamic list of commands tailored specifically to the active screen or application. This eliminates the need to guess generic commands when interacting with complex third-party app interfaces.
