Temporary iCloud Storage for iOS 15 Device Migration
Apple introduced a feature in iOS 15 that grants users free, temporary, and effectively unlimited iCloud storage to facilitate seamless data migration between devices. This system allows users with substantial amounts of data—particularly large photo, video, and multimedia libraries—to create a complete cloud backup even if their personal iCloud storage tier is full or limited to the standard free 5GB allocation.
How Temporary Storage Works
When you purchase a new iPhone or iPad, iOS 15 allows you to create a migration backup through Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Get Started. If your device detects that your existing iCloud plan lacks sufficient space to back up your current data footprint, it automatically provisions temporary iCloud storage at no additional cost.
Unlike standard backups that halt when your storage ceiling is reached, this temporary allocation expands dynamically to accommodate your entire device snapshot.
Handling Large Media Files
Media files such as high-resolution photos, 4K videos, and local app caches represent the largest portion of device storage. Temporary iCloud storage handles these files through distinct mechanisms depending on your device setup:
- Devices with iCloud Photos Disabled: If you store photos and videos directly on your local device storage rather than syncing via iCloud Photos, the temporary backup packages these full-resolution files alongside system data and app configurations. The temporary tier expands to absorb the entire media payload without compressing or downgrading quality.
- Devices with iCloud Photos Enabled: If your media is already partially or fully synced to iCloud Photos, the backup prioritizes non-synced data, app structures, and device settings. However, any original media files that have not yet uploaded to iCloud Photos due to past storage limits are captured by the temporary backup mechanism to ensure zero data loss during transfer.
Expiration and Data Retention Limits
Temporary backups are designed strictly for transition, not long-term storage:
- 21-Day Window: Once created, the temporary backup remains available in iCloud for 21 days.
- Extensions: If your new device has not arrived within that timeframe, you can request an additional 21 days through the Settings app before the original backup expires.
- Automatic Deletion: Once you restore the backup onto your new device, the temporary data remains available for a brief grace period to confirm successful transfer, after which Apple automatically purges the temporary files from their servers.
Network and Power Requirements
Because backing up dozens or hundreds of gigabytes of media requires substantial bandwidth, iOS 15 relies on continuous Wi-Fi and power connections. The initial upload runs in the background, pausing automatically if the device disconnects from power, experiences network interruptions, or overheats, and resuming immediately once optimal conditions return.
