Sync Focus Custom Home Screens Across iPads on iOS 15

Apple’s iPadOS 15 introduced Focus modes to minimize distractions, featuring the ability to hide irrelevant Home Screen pages when a specific profile is engaged. While Focus states, rules, and schedules automatically synchronize across your iPads using iCloud, custom Home Screen page assignments require specific local configuration due to how iPadOS handles individual screen layouts. This guide details how the synchronization mechanism operates and how to achieve a uniform Home Screen setup across multiple iPads.

The Role of iCloud in Focus Synchronization

When you create a custom Focus mode—such as Work, Personal, or Reading—iPadOS uses your Apple ID to synchronize the core profile across all devices.

By navigating to Settings > Focus and enabling Share Across Devices, the following data syncs via iCloud:

  • Focus activation state (turning on a Focus on one iPad automatically activates it on another).
  • Allowed and blocked contacts and notifications.
  • Scheduled automations and triggers (time, location, or app-based).

How Custom Home Screen Pages Interact Across Devices

While the Focus state itself is universal, Home Screen page layouts are device-specific. iPadOS does not mirror grid layouts, app positions, or custom widgets across different hardware because screen dimensions, app availability, and user preferences often vary between devices.

Because of this architectural separation, assigning a custom page to a Focus mode operates through a hybrid approach:

  1. Synchronized Trigger: When iPad A activates a Focus profile, iPad B receives the iCloud signal and enters the identical Focus profile instantly.
  2. Local Page Display: iPad B does not automatically pull the physical page layout from iPad A. Instead, it checks its own local configuration to see which Home Screen pages you have designated for that active Focus mode on that specific iPad.

If you have not explicitly designated custom pages on the secondary iPad, it will activate the Focus mode but continue displaying its default Home Screen pages without filtering them.

Setting Up Matching Custom Pages on Multiple iPads

To have your custom Home Screen setup appear uniformly across all synced iPads, follow these steps on each device:

  1. Create the Pages: On both iPads, create and organize the specific Home Screen pages containing the apps and widgets you want visible during that Focus mode.
  2. Enable Sharing: Go to Settings > Focus and verify that Share Across Devices is toggled on across all devices.
  3. Assign Custom Pages Locally:
    • Select your custom Focus profile in Settings > Focus.
    • Under the Options section, tap Home Screen.
    • Toggle on Custom Pages.
    • Select the checkboxes for the specific pages you want displayed on that iPad when the Focus is active.
  4. Repeat on Secondary iPads: Open the same Focus mode on your other iPad and repeat step 3, selecting the corresponding pages created on that device.

Once configured, activating the Focus mode on any connected iPad will instantly trigger the corresponding customized Home Screen view across all your synced devices.
