Stream Together with SharePlay in iOS 15

SharePlay is a core feature introduced in iOS 15 that transforms FaceTime from a simple video calling tool into a shared media hub. By integrating directly into the operating system, SharePlay allows users to watch movies, listen to music, and share their screens in real time with friends and family during a FaceTime call. This guide breaks down how SharePlay works, its synchronization features, and how you can use it to stream content together seamlessly.

How SharePlay Works

SharePlay functions directly through the FaceTime interface. When you are on an active FaceTime call and open a compatible streaming app, iOS automatically detects the media and prompts you to choose whether to play the content just for yourself or share it with everyone on the call. Selecting the share option streams the session instantly to all participants.

Synchronized Playback and Shared Controls

The standout feature of SharePlay is real-time synchronization. The system keeps media completely in sync across all devices connected to the call.

  • Universal Controls: Anyone participating in the SharePlay session has access to the playback controls. If one person pauses, rewinds, fast-forwards, or plays the media, the action instantly applies to everyone’s device.
  • Smart Volume (Audio Ducking): When someone on the call speaks, SharePlay automatically lowers the media volume so participants can chat without pausing the show or struggling to hear one another.

Account and Subscription Requirements

SharePlay does not act as a screen-broadcast of copyrighted material; instead, it syncs playback across individual accounts. This means that to stream content from a paid service:

  • Each participant must have an active subscription to the app being used (e.g., Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, or Paramount+).
  • For purchased or rented content, each user typically needs to have access to the title.
  • If a participant does not have access or the app installed, iOS prompts them to subscribe, purchase the content, or start a free trial before joining the stream.

Screen Sharing

In addition to media streaming apps, SharePlay includes a native screen-sharing capability. Users can share their iPhone display with everyone on the FaceTime call to browse web pages, review documents, look through photo albums, or give app demonstrations in real time.

Cross-Device Integration with Apple TV

While the FaceTime call remains active on your iPhone, iOS 15 allows you to hand off the video stream to an Apple TV running tvOS 15. By selecting AirPlay within the SharePlay session, the video moves to the big screen while the audio and FaceTime video remain on your iPhone, allowing for a comfortable group-viewing experience.
