Siri Voice Selection Changes in iOS 15

Apple introduced significant updates to Siri's voice options in iOS 15, focusing on diversity, natural speech synthesis, and user autonomy. Rather than defaulting to a standard female persona, the operating system presents users with a selection prompt during device setup, replaces gendered labels with numbered alternatives, and incorporates more lifelike voice options powered by neural text-to-speech technology.

Removal of the Default Voice

Prior to this update cycle, Siri automatically defaulted to a female voice in most regions. Starting with iOS 14.5 and fully integrated into iOS 15, Apple removed this default. When setting up a new iPhone or iPad, users are now required to choose their preferred Siri voice from the available list before completing configuration.

Neutral Numbering Instead of Gendered Labels

Apple shifted away from traditional "Male" and "Female" identifiers in the settings menu. Voice options are now organized under two categories:

  • Variety: Specifies regional accents, such as American, Australian, British, Indian, Irish, or South African.
  • Voice: Replaces gender tags with neutral numbered choices (e.g., Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Voice 4).

New Neural Text-to-Speech Profiles

iOS 15 expanded the American English voice library with additional options recorded by diverse voice talent. These voices utilize Apple's Neural Text-to-Speech (Neural TTS) engine to generate organic-sounding pitch, cadence, and inflection in real-time. Within the iOS 15 update cycle, Apple also added a fifth American voice option designed to sound neutral and non-binary.

How to Access the Voice Settings

Users can customize these options at any time by navigating to:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Siri & Search.
  3. Select Siri Voice.
  4. Choose a preferred Variety and test the corresponding Voice numbers until the desired profile is selected.
