Share Focus Status with Specific Contacts in iOS 15

Apple's iOS 15 introduced Focus modes to minimize distractions, featuring a "Share Focus Status" capability that alerts contacts in Messages when your notifications are silenced. While you can manage this feature globally or per Focus profile, iOS 15 also provides granular privacy controls that let you selectively allow or block status sharing for individual contacts. This guide explains how status sharing works and how to customize visibility on a person-by-person basis.

How Focus Status Sharing Works

When Focus Status is active, anyone messaging you via iMessage sees a discreet notice stating that you have notifications silenced. Depending on your configuration, they may also have the option to bypass the silence using "Notify Anyway" for urgent matters.

By default, turning on status sharing applies across your contacts, but iOS 15 does not force an all-or-nothing approach. Instead, status visibility is governed by two layers: the system-level Focus settings and per-contact overrides located within the Messages app.

How to Block or Allow Status Sharing for an Individual Contact

Individual contact controls are managed directly within individual conversation threads in the Messages app rather than the central Settings menu.

To adjust the setting for a specific person:

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Select the conversation thread with the contact you want to configure.
  3. Tap the contact’s name or profile picture at the top of the screen to open the conversation details.
  4. Locate the Share Focus Status toggle:
    • To allow sharing: Switch the toggle to the On (green) position. The contact will see when you have notifications silenced.
    • To block sharing: Switch the toggle to the Off (gray) position. The contact will never see that you are in a Focus mode, and your thread will appear completely standard to them.

The Relationship Between Global and Contact Settings

The per-contact toggle functions as an override, but it still relies on your system-wide permissions:

  • Global Requirement: For an individual contact to see your status, you must first enable Share Focus Status under Settings > Focus > Focus Status, as well as within the specific custom Focus mode you are using.
  • Individual Block: If global sharing is enabled, turning the toggle off in a specific contact's thread prevents only that person from seeing your status.
  • Global Disable: If you disable status sharing at the system or Focus profile level, no contacts will see your status, regardless of their individual settings in the Messages app.

What the Contact Sees

When status sharing is allowed, the contact sees a small banner at the bottom of the conversation window: "[Contact Name] has notifications silenced." If your Focus settings permit emergency bypasses, a "Notify Anyway" prompt may appear after they send a message.

When status sharing is blocked, the contact sees a completely normal iMessage interface. Messages deliver silently on your end without indicating to the sender that a Focus mode is active.
