Set Up Custom Email Domains on iOS 15

Apple introduced custom email domain support with iCloud+ in iOS 15, allowing users to send and receive emails using personal domain names directly through iCloud Mail. This article explains how configuring a custom domain on iOS 15 eliminates the need for separate email hosting services, simplifies DNS management, and streamlines the process of generating and deploying personalized email addresses across Apple devices.

Native iCloud+ Integration

Prior to iOS 15, hosting email on a personalized domain required purchasing separate email hosting from a third-party provider and manually configuring IMAP, POP3, and SMTP settings inside the Mail app. With iOS 15, Apple integrated domain management directly into iCloud+. Once a domain is verified, Apple handles the mail servers, eliminating external email client setups and complex server authentication protocols.

Simplified DNS Configuration and Verification

The setup process standardizes DNS mapping. Apple provides the exact MX, TXT, and CNAME records needed to route mail through iCloud servers, with automated configuration available for supported registrars. Once these records propagate, the domain is permanently tied to the user’s iCloud infrastructure, removing technical friction from future address generation.

Instant Address Generation Without Server Dashboards

After domain validation, creating new email addresses does not require logging into a web hosting control panel. Users can generate new addresses directly through iCloud settings. Each user can configure up to three email addresses per domain for personal use, instantly mapping them to their primary iCloud inbox.

Native Apple Mail Implementation

When an address is generated under the custom domain, iOS 15 automatically registers it across all devices signed into the associated Apple ID. The new address appears immediately as a selectable option in the "From" field within the native Apple Mail app. Inbound messages route straight to the user's unified inbox alongside standard @icloud.com mail, requiring zero additional app downloads or credentials.

Integrated Family Sharing and Catch-All Capabilities

The setup extends domain utility to up to five Family Sharing members, allowing administrators to authorize family members to generate their own branded addresses under the same domain. Additionally, iOS 15 supports a catch-all feature that automatically routes any message sent to an unassigned address on the domain into the primary inbox, preventing lost communications without requiring the manual creation of individual forwarding aliases.
