Safari Tab Overview Changes in iOS 15

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a significant redesign to Safari's tab overview screen, replacing the long-standing vertical card stack with a modern, two-column grid. This update was designed to improve tab visibility, streamline navigation, and integrate powerful organization tools like Tab Groups. Beyond the visual transformation, the redesigned interface also added new search capabilities, drag-and-drop tab organization, and context menus for bulk tab management.

The Two-Column Grid Layout

The most immediate change in iOS 15 was the retirement of the 3D cascading "rolodex" stack. In its place, Apple implemented a flat, two-column grid view.

  • Better Visibility: Instead of overlapping cards where only the top edge of each webpage was visible, the grid displays full, compact thumbnail previews of each open webpage.
  • Easier Identification: Favicons and page titles are clearly displayed in the top bar of each thumbnail, making it faster to distinguish between multiple open pages.
  • Streamlined Dismissal: Each thumbnail features an "X" button in the top-right corner, though users can also swipe a card to the left to close it.

Introduction of Tab Groups

iOS 15 introduced Tab Groups directly into the tab overview screen.

  • Central Switching Bar: At the bottom center of the tab overview, a pill-shaped button displays the current tab count, active Tab Group name, or Private Browsing status.
  • Menu Access: Tapping this bar opens a dedicated menu allowing users to switch between regular tabs and Private Browsing, create a new empty Tab Group, or save all currently open tabs into a new group.
  • Cross-Device Sync: Any Tab Groups organized within this screen automatically sync across iPadOS and macOS devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

In-Tab Search and Sorting

Finding specific pages among dozens of open tabs became significantly easier with dedicated search and sorting options:

  • Tab Search Bar: Swiping down while at the top of the tab overview reveals a search bar that filters open tabs in real time by title or URL.
  • Arranging Tabs: Long-pressing any tab thumbnail brings up a context menu with options to "Arrange Tabs by Title" or "Arrange Tabs by Website," sorting the entire grid alphabetically.

Drag-and-Drop Reordering

Prior to iOS 15, reordering tabs was limited and cumbersome. The grid view added intuitive drag-and-drop support:

  • Users can tap and hold any tab tile to lift it, then drag it to a new position within the grid.
  • Users can also drag a tab directly onto the bottom Tab Groups menu to move it into a specific group.

Streamlined Bottom Toolbar

The bottom toolbar in the overview screen was simplified to keep essential actions within thumb's reach:

  • Add Tab (+): The new tab button was moved to the bottom-left corner for single-handed access.
  • Done: The "Done" button sits in the bottom-right corner to quickly return to the active web page.
  • Tab Count / Groups: Centered between the controls for rapid navigation between different browsing contexts.
