Safari Search Suggestions Updates in iOS 15
Apple introduced notable enhancements to Safari in iOS 15, revamping the address bar drop-down search suggestions to streamline mobile browsing. These updates modernize the interface and reduce friction by integrating rich inline answers, instant tab-switching shortcuts, and enhanced query completions directly into the suggestion menu before a user even taps search.
Redesigned Visual Interface
The search suggestions dropdown received a complete visual overhaul to match the modernized iOS 15 design language. Suggestions are organized into clearer, card-style grouped sections with rounded corners, making it easier to distinguish between web search predictions, browsing history, and bookmarked pages.
Switch to Open Tabs
To prevent users from opening redundant tabs, iOS 15 introduced a "Switch to Tab" indicator directly within the search drop-down. When a user types a query or URL that matches an already open tab, Safari displays an option to jump directly to that existing tab rather than loading a duplicate page.
Rich Search Results and Instant Answers
Safari in iOS 15 expanded its integration with Siri Knowledge to deliver rich search suggestions. Typing certain queries immediately surfaces interactive results—such as weather forecasts, unit and currency conversions, flight statuses, sports scores, and Wikipedia summaries—directly inside the drop-down menu without needing to load a search engine results page.
Integrated "Find on Page" Suggestions
The ability to search for text within the current webpage was moved closer to the user's workflow. Typing a word into the address bar automatically generates an "On This Page" section at the bottom of the drop-down, showing the number of matches and allowing users to initiate an in-page search instantly.
Query Insertion Arrows
Next to search suggestions, Safari added quick-insert icons. Tapping the arrow next to a suggested search term copies that specific text into the address bar without immediately executing the search, allowing users to refine or expand their query with additional keywords.
