Reminders App Tag Management Updates in iOS 15
Apple introduced a native tagging system to the Reminders app in iOS 15, significantly enhancing how users categorize and filter their tasks. This update brought a dedicated Tag Browser to the main list view, integrated multi-tag filtering, enabled the creation of custom Smart Lists based on tags, and provided global management tools to edit or delete tags across all lists.
The Tag Browser
With iOS 15, the main screen of the Reminders app includes a
dedicated "Tags" section located at the bottom of the list view.
Whenever a user types a hashtag (such as #work or
#errand) into a task or uses the tag shortcut on the
keyboard toolbar, the tag is automatically added to this centralized Tag
Browser. The section displays all active tags in alphabetical order,
giving users a single location to view their entire taxonomy without
navigating through individual reminder lists.
Multi-Tag Filtering Directly from the List View
The Tag Browser functions as an interactive filter. Tapping a tag instantly displays a consolidated view of every task labeled with that tag across all lists. In iOS 15, users can also select multiple tags at once to narrow down their tasks further. When multiple tags are tapped, the list view dynamically updates, allowing users to toggle between viewing tasks that include "All Selected" tags or "Any Selected" tag.
Custom Smart Lists Based on Tags
Building on the tag list view, iOS 15 allows users to turn filtered tag views into persistent Smart Lists. When creating a new custom list, users can specify "Tags" as a primary parameter alongside criteria such as date, time, location, flags, and priority. This integration automatically populates the custom list with matching tasks, streamlining project tracking directly from the main interface.
Global Tag Editing and Deletion
Managing tags within the list view is streamlined to prevent tedious manual updates. From the Tag Browser, users can tap and hold (or swipe) on any tag to access management options:
- Renaming: Changing the name of a tag in the Tag Browser automatically updates that tag across every reminder where it is currently used.
- Deleting: Removing a tag from the browser strips the hashtag from all associated reminders without deleting the tasks themselves.
