New Memoji Expressions and Customization in iOS 15

Apple's iOS 15 update introduced a broader range of expressive and inclusive options for Memoji, allowing users to better capture distinct moods, looks, and identities. This update expanded the feature set beyond standard aesthetics, adding dynamic new sticker expressions, independent eye color customization, and representation-focused facial accessories.

New Expressive Memoji Stickers

While the core avatar builder retains a neutral resting face for base modeling, iOS 15 significantly expanded the range of facial expressions available through the Memoji sticker library. The update introduced nine new expressive poses and gestures:

  • The Lightbulb Moment: An excited facial expression depicting a sudden idea or inspiration, accompanied by a glowing lightbulb above the head.
  • The Hand Wave: A welcoming, friendly facial expression paired with a raised hand gesture.
  • The Shaka Sign: A relaxed, smiling expression featuring the traditional "hang loose" hand gesture.
  • Crying Tears of Joy / Heartfelt Emotion: Enhanced emotive variations that allow users to convey nuanced digital reactions in Messages.

Heterochromia (Two Different Eye Colors)

A major facial customization introduced in iOS 15 is the ability to select different colors for each eye. Users can enable heterochromia directly in the Eyes category, tailoring the left and right iris colors independently to reflect complete or sectoral heterochromia.

Expressive Eyewear and Color Gradients

iOS 15 introduced three new glasses styles, including heart-shaped, star-shaped, and retro-inspired frames. Alongside new geometries, users gained the ability to customize frame colors and lens tints with multi-color gradient options, adding personality and visual flair to the avatar’s facial region.

Inclusive Facial and Head Accessories

To provide authentic representation for individuals with medical and physical differences, iOS 15 added several functional facial accessories:

  • Oxygen Tubes: Transparent nasal cannulas resting across the cheeks and beneath the nose.
  • Cochlear Implants: Fitted to either or both ears with distinct color choices.
  • Soft Helmets: Headgear designed for head protection, customizable with various colors.

Multicolored Headwear

Users can select up to three distinct colors on supported headwear and hats, allowing sports fans, hobbyists, or specific subcultures to coordinate their Memoji's headwear with real-world styles.
