New Memoji Customization Features in iOS 15

Apple's iOS 15 update significantly expanded the Memoji customization suite, offering users unprecedented control over their digital avatars. The update introduced dozens of new wardrobe selections, expanded accessibility representations, heterochromia eye customization, advanced eyewear and headwear options, and a fresh collection of expressive stickers. Below is a detailed breakdown of all the customization options added to Memoji in iOS 15.

Expanded Wardrobe and Outfits

Prior to iOS 15, Memoji clothing choices were limited primarily to headwear and upper-chest silhouettes. With iOS 15, Apple introduced a dedicated clothing section with over 40 distinct outfit options. Users can select casual wear, formal attire, athletic gear, and work uniforms, complete with the ability to choose up to three different colors for various parts of a single outfit to reflect personal style.

Inclusive Accessibility Options

To promote broader inclusivity, iOS 15 introduced three major accessibility options for Memoji characters:

  • Cochlear Implants: Users can add cochlear implants to either the left ear, right ear, or both ears, with customizable colors.
  • Oxygen Tubes: An option to add nasal cannula oxygen tubes across the face.
  • Soft Helmets: Headwear choices now include protective soft helmets.

Heterochromia (Different Eye Colors)

Users can now set different colors for the left and right eyes to represent heterochromia. When customizing the eyes, tapping the color selection allows you to apply shades individually to each eye, matching real-life eye variations.

Advanced Eyewear Designs

The eyewear category received a significant redesign, adding new frame shapes such as heart-shaped, star-shaped, and retro cat-eye glasses. Additionally, iOS 15 enabled independent color customization for the frames and the lenses, allowing users to create tinted sunglasses, clear prescription glasses, or brightly colored fashion frames.

Multi-Colored Headwear

Headwear customization expanded beyond solid colors. In iOS 15, users can select up to two distinct colors for hats, beanies, caps, and turbans, enabling combinations that can represent favorite sports teams, national flags, or custom fashion aesthetics.

New Memoji Stickers

Alongside avatar customization tools, iOS 15 introduced nine new expressive Memoji stickers for use in Messages, Mail, and supported third-party apps:

  • A hand wave
  • A shaka (hang loose) sign
  • A lightbulb moment (idea)
  • Crossed fingers
  • A peace sign with both hands
  • Cloud of smoke/running away
  • Sweating with relief
  • Sparkles/jazz hands
  • Face with spiral eyes
