New iOS 15 Memoji Customizations and Features

Apple expanded its digital avatar toolkit in iOS 15, giving users more ways to personalize their Memoji with inclusive accessories, diverse wardrobe options, and nuanced facial features. This update introduced extensive clothing selections, two-tone headwear, accessibility-focused hardware, independent eye coloring, and an expanded library of expressive stickers to enhance digital communication across Messages and FaceTime.

Customizable Outfits and Wardrobe Styles

iOS 15 introduced more than 40 outfit choices, allowing users to tailor their Memoji's look to fit personal style, seasonal trends, or mood. Each outfit offers deep customization, supporting up to three distinct colors per garment. This allows users to independently choose primary, secondary, and accent colors for sleeves, collars, patterns, and fabrics.

Inclusive Accessibility Options

To promote broader representation, Apple added several key accessibility accessories to the Memoji builder:

  • Cochlear Implants: Users can add cochlear implants to either or both ears, with customizable processor and coil colors.
  • Oxygen Tubes: A clear nasal cannula option allows users to display personal medical needs accurately.
  • Soft Helmets: Soft-shell headgear options are available for users who wear protective head coverings.

Multicolor Headwear and New Glasses

The headwear catalog expanded to support two-tone color customization, allowing users to select separate primary and secondary shades for caps, beanies, and wraps. In addition, the eyewear category received three new frame shapes: heart, star, and retro designs, alongside options to tint the frame and the lenses separately.

Heterochromia for Eye Colors

Users can select different colors for their Memoji's left and right eyes. This feature accurately represents heterochromia iridum, allowing for unique combinations of iris colors, ranging from natural tones to bold shades.

New Stickers and Facial Expressions

Alongside physical customization, iOS 15 added nine new Memoji sticker poses that capture diverse facial expressions and gestures. These include:

  • A shaka (hang loose) hand sign
  • A friendly hand wave
  • A lightbulb moment indicating an idea
  • Expressions of peace, focus, and excitement

These expressions automatically apply across custom avatars, ready to use as stickers in Messages, Mail, and supported third-party apps.
