New FaceTime Grid View Layout Options in iOS 15
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a dedicated Grid View layout for Group FaceTime calls to improve call organization and visual clarity. This update replaced the sole reliance on dynamic, floating windows with a structured layout featuring equal-sized participant tiles, active speaker highlighting, and seamless controls. Below is a breakdown of the specific layout enhancements brought to FaceTime's Grid View on iOS 15.
Equal-Sized Tile Layout
Prior to iOS 15, Group FaceTime defaulted strictly to "Automatic Prominence," where participant windows floated dynamically and expanded or shrunk depending on who was speaking. iOS 15 introduced a standardized Grid View that arranges all participants in uniform, equal-sized tiles. This static arrangement keeps the interface stable, preventing visual clutter and motion sickness caused by tiles constantly shifting across the screen.
Active Speaker Highlighting
To ensure callers can still identify who is talking without altering the screen layout, Grid View incorporates an active speaker outline. Whenever a participant speaks, a distinct white border automatically illuminates around their designated tile. This visual indicator provides clear conversational cues while keeping every participant's window the exact same size.
Six-Tile Screen Capacity
The Grid View is optimized to display up to six participants simultaneously on the screen of an iPhone or iPad. If a group call exceeds six people, the remaining participants are neatly organized and visible in a row along the bottom of the interface, or users can swipe to view additional participants without breaking the structured grid format.
How to Switch to Grid View
Users can easily toggle between the traditional dynamic view and the new grid format during any active Group FaceTime call:
- Tap the screen to reveal the FaceTime call controls.
- Tap the Settings or participant list panel at the top right of the controls bar.
- Select the Grid View icon (represented by a four-square icon).
- Tap it again to toggle back to the dynamic prominence layout whenever preferred.
