Measure App Accuracy Improvements in iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 update introduced meaningful refinements to the Measure app, focusing primarily on precision, edge detection, and augmented reality stability. By leveraging the updated ARKit 5 framework and enhanced processing for LiDAR-equipped devices, the operating system delivered more dependable real-world measurements, smoother surface tracking, and improved measurement consistency across various environments.
ARKit 5 and Surface Tracking
The core accuracy improvements in iOS 15 stem from the integration of ARKit 5. This framework update significantly enhanced the underlying algorithms responsible for plane detection and depth estimation. Devices running iOS 15 can identify vertical and horizontal boundaries faster, reducing the drift that previously occurred when moving the device along long surfaces. This ensures that starting and ending measurement points stay anchored precisely where placed.
LiDAR Sensor Refinements
For devices equipped with a LiDAR scanner—such as the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro series, and recent iPad Pro models—iOS 15 refined depth-map processing. The system samples depth points more densely, allowing the Measure app to distinguish between closely spaced surfaces, such as a baseboard and a wall, or a tabletop and an object resting on it. This drastically reduced the margin of error when measuring non-flat or textured surfaces.
Improved Edge Snapping and Ruler View
iOS 15 made edge detection significantly more responsive. When measuring objects with defined borders, the app features an improved magnetic snapping mechanic accompanied by haptic feedback. This helps users lock onto corners and edges without relying entirely on manual optical alignment. When measuring smaller objects at close range, the app automatically transitions to a granular ruler view with higher millimeter- and fractional-inch precision.
People Measurement Enhancements
The automatic person-measuring feature, exclusive to LiDAR-enabled models, gained accuracy optimizations in iOS 15. The app can more accurately differentiate between hair, hats, and the actual crown of a person's head. Additionally, the update improved height detection for seated individuals, consistently measuring from the floor or seat to the top of the head with fewer false readings caused by loose clothing or background clutter.
Low-Light Performance
Prior versions of the Measure app struggled when ambient lighting diminished, causing measurement points to shift. With iOS 15's improved camera sensor integration and exposure handling, the app maintains tracking accuracy in dimmer environments by relying more effectively on hybrid optical and depth sensor inputs.
