iOS 15 Weather App Air Quality Map Updates

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a completely redesigned Weather app that transformed the way users monitor atmospheric conditions. A key highlight of this overhaul was the integration of full-screen, interactive Air Quality Index (AQI) maps. This update shifted the app from displaying simple numerical data cards to providing rich, visual, and geographic representations of regional pollution levels.

Full-Screen Interactive Map Experience

Prior to iOS 15, air quality data was restricted to a static card showing a single numerical value and a brief health recommendation. iOS 15 introduced a dedicated full-screen map interface that users can access directly by tapping the map icon in the bottom-left corner of the app or by tapping the Air Quality module within a specific location's forecast.

Color-Coded Pollution Overlays

The updated AQI map features a dynamic, color-coded overlay that visually represents air pollution severity. The gradient follows standard air quality scales:

  • Green: Good
  • Yellow: Moderate
  • Orange: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
  • Red: Unhealthy
  • Purple: Very Unhealthy
  • Maroon: Hazardous

This color-based visualization allows users to quickly assess pollution patterns, smoke plumes, or smog coverage across expansive geographic areas.

Pan and Zoom Exploration

Users are no longer limited to checking air quality only in their saved cities. The iOS 15 map interface allows full pan-and-zoom functionality, enabling users to explore neighboring towns, states, or foreign regions seamlessly without adding those locations to their permanent weather list.

Dedicated Layer Switching

The Weather app map integrates air quality directly into a multi-layer system. Users can tap the layers icon in the top-right corner of the map screen to toggle instantly between three core views: Air Quality, Precipitation, and Temperature.

Expanded Regional Support

Apple expanded the availability of dedicated air quality mapping data to broader international regions with iOS 15. The AQI map feature specifically launched with native coverage for countries including the United States, Canada, China, India, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, South Korea, Spain, and Mexico.
