iOS 15 Voice Memo Storage Location Settings
With the release of iOS 15, Apple refined several aspects of the Voice Memos app, leading many users to wonder how file storage and directory settings were impacted. This article covers how Voice Memo storage works in iOS 15, the actual changes made to related settings, and how you can manage or move your audio files across your device and iCloud.
Default Storage Behavior in iOS 15
In iOS 15, Apple did not introduce an option to change the default local storage directory for Voice Memos. Recordings continue to be saved automatically within the app's internal, sandboxed storage on your device. There is no setting within iOS 15 that allows users to designate an external folder, an SD card, or a specific folder inside the Files app as the default target directory for newly recorded memos.
iCloud Syncing and Cloud Storage
While local file path customization remains unavailable, iOS 15 streamlined how Voice Memos interact with iCloud:
- Unified iCloud Toggle: You can manage whether recordings consume iCloud storage by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and toggling Voice Memos on or off.
- Automatic Cloud Backup: When enabled, memos sync seamlessly across all Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID, using your overall iCloud storage allotment rather than only local device capacity.
- Storage Optimization: If your iPhone is low on storage, iOS manages cached data, but the audio files remain accessible through iCloud.
Location-Based Naming vs. Storage Location
A common point of confusion in iOS 15 is the "Location-based Naming" setting. This feature does not dictate where files are saved; rather, it uses your geographical location to name the recording automatically (for example, naming a track after your current city or street).
You can control this feature by navigating to Settings > Voice Memos > Location-based Naming. Toggling this off switches the default naming scheme back to sequential numbering (e.g., "New Recording 1").
Managing Storage Footprint
iOS 15 improved transparency regarding how much physical space your audio clips occupy:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Scroll down and select Voice Memos.
From this screen, you can see the total storage used by your recordings and delete the app or clear space if necessary. Additionally, the Recently Deleted folder inside the Voice Memos app retains deleted audio for a set period (adjustable under Settings > Voice Memos > Clear Deleted), ensuring storage is permanently cleared only when desired.
Exporting Files to Custom Locations
If you need your voice memos stored in a specific directory or cloud provider:
- Open the Voice Memos app.
- Tap the recording you want to relocate.
- Tap the three dots (...) icon.
- Select Save to Files.
- Choose your preferred local folder, external drive, or third-party cloud storage service (such as Google Drive or Dropbox).
