iOS 15 Text Message Notification Changes

Apple's iOS 15 update introduced significant visual redesigns to notification banners across the operating system, with incoming text messages receiving some of the most noticeable updates. The redesigned banners prioritize sender identity, featuring integrated contact photos, modified app icon placements, and streamlined typography to make incoming communications quicker to identify at a glance.

Addition of Contact Photos

The most prominent change to text message banners in iOS 15 is the display of contact photos. Prior to this update, notifications displayed the Messages app icon next to the sender's name and message preview. In iOS 15, the banner prominently features the sender's contact photo, Memoji, or initials on the left side of the banner, putting the focus directly on the person reaching out.

Repositioned App Icons

Because contact photos occupy the primary graphic space on the left side of the banner, the Messages app icon was scaled down. The app icon now appears as a small badge in the lower-right corner of the contact's photo. This visual hierarchy immediately clarifies who is sending the message while still indicating which communication platform the notification is coming from.

Streamlined Layout and Typography

The overall footprint and aesthetic of the notification banner were refined for better readability:

  • Compact Presentation: The banner maintains rounded edges with adjusted padding to display more text content within a compact space.
  • Text Hierarchy: The sender's name appears in bold at the top, directly beside the avatar, with the message body cleanly aligned underneath.
  • Third-Party Messaging Parity: Apple extended this visual framework to third-party messaging apps via developer APIs, giving notifications from apps like WhatsApp, Signal, and Slack the same avatar-focused layout as the native Messages app.

Focus Mode Indicators

When interacting with iOS 15’s Focus features, message notification banners may also reflect your current status. If a sender bypasses a Focus filter using an emergency breakthrough, the banner includes a clear visual indicator specifying that the message was delivered immediately due to urgent status.
