iOS 15 Text Editing Context Menu Updates

Apple’s iOS 15 introduced significant productivity improvements to the standard text editing context menu across iPhone and iPad. This update expanded the floating callout bar beyond basic copy-and-paste commands by integrating system-level machine learning tools, native translation, and improved media input options. The resulting interface allows users to manipulate, convert, and input text much faster without needing to switch between different applications.

Scan Text (Live Text Integration)

The most prominent addition to the context menu in editable text fields is the "Scan Text" feature (represented by a camera icon). Powered by iOS 15's Live Text optical character recognition (OCR), tapping this option opens a live camera view directly within the keyboard area. Users can point their camera at any physical text—such as documents, whiteboards, or receipts—and insert the detected text straight into the active text field in real time.

Built-in System Translation

iOS 15 integrated the system Translate app directly into the text selection menu. When highlighting foreign text in any standard text field or readable view, the "Translate" option appears in the context bar. Tapping it opens a modal overlay that translates the highlighted phrase, offers audio playback of the pronunciation, and allows users to copy the translation or replace the selected text with the translated result.

Streamlined Text Formatting

The styling sub-menu received usability refinements to reduce clutter on smaller screens. Standard formatting options—such as Bold, Italic, and Underline (often grouped under the "BIU" option)—were reorganized alongside indentation and list options, allowing users to quickly apply inline formatting to supported rich-text editors like Apple Notes and Mail with fewer taps.

Enhanced Sharing and Look Up

The native "Share" and "Look Up" functions were refreshed for better context handling. Selecting text and choosing "Look Up" in iOS 15 provides richer visual cards containing dictionary definitions, Siri Knowledge, web suggestions, and maps. The "Share" button directly triggers the updated system Share Sheet, enabling users to instantly send selected snippets to contacts, third-party apps, or shortcuts.
