iOS 15 Status Bar Location Icons Explained
iOS 15 introduced refined visual indicators to provide users with transparent, real-time feedback whenever apps request or monitor their geographic coordinates. This guide covers the specific location icons visible in the status bar, the variations in their appearance, and how the Control Center identifies which apps are actively tracking your device.
The Location Arrow in the Status Bar
The primary indicator for location usage in iOS 15 is the directional arrow icon, which appears in the top corner of the screen:
- Solid Arrow: Indicates that an application or system service is actively using your location at that exact moment.
- Hollow Arrow: Signifies that an app has set up a geofence and may receive your location data if you cross a predefined geographic boundary.
- Blue Bubble with a White Arrow: Appears when an app is actively using your location in the background, such as Apple Maps or Google Maps providing turn-by-turn navigation while you use another app.
Control Center Identification
When an app accesses your location, iOS 15 makes it easy to identify the specific software responsible. Swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen opens the Control Center, where an active privacy banner is displayed at the very top.
This banner displays the location arrow alongside the exact name of the app that is currently using, or has recently used, your Location Services. This feature provides direct visibility into location requests without requiring you to navigate through system menus.
Settings Privacy Indicators
In addition to live status bar icons, iOS 15 uses color-coded indicators within Settings > Privacy > Location Services to provide a historical log of access:
- Purple Arrow: Appears next to an item that has recently accessed your location.
- Gray Arrow: Indicates that the app accessed your location within the past 24 hours.
