iOS 15 Spotlight Photo Search by Person and Location

With the release of iOS 15, Apple integrated the Photos app directly into Spotlight, allowing users to locate specific images without opening the Photos application. By utilizing on-device machine learning and existing metadata, Spotlight lets you search your entire photo library directly from the Home Screen or Lock Screen using contact names, recognized faces, landmarks, and geographic locations.

How On-Device Indexing Operates

Spotlight’s photo search relies entirely on the Apple Neural Engine to analyze images locally on your device. When your iPhone is locked and connected to power, iOS scans your photo library to detect faces, objects, scenes, and text through computer vision.

  • Person Recognition: The system cross-references recognized faces with the "People" album in your Photos app. If you have assigned a name to a person—or linked them to a Contact card—Spotlight indexes those photos under that specific name.
  • Location Mapping: When a photo is taken, the camera embeds EXIF metadata containing GPS coordinates (if Location Services are enabled). Spotlight pairs these coordinates with Apple Maps data, reverse-geocoding the latitude and longitude into searchable locations such as countries, cities, neighborhoods, and recognized points of interest.

Performing a Search in Spotlight

To search for photos using these parameters:

  1. Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen or from the Lock Screen to open Spotlight.
  2. Enter the name of a person (e.g., "Emma") or a location (e.g., "San Francisco" or "Golden Gate Bridge").
  3. Scroll to the "Photos" section in the search results to view matching images.

Spotlight also supports contextual multi-parameter queries. You can combine names, locations, and scenes in a single query—such as "Emma Hawaii" or "David beach"—and Spotlight will filter results that match both the identified person and the specific location. Tapping a photo result opens the image directly in full resolution within the Photos app.

Privacy and Performance

All indexing and image analysis occur locally on the iPhone. No photo data or search queries are sent to Apple’s servers to process visual or location recognition, ensuring personal images remain private while maintaining instant search responsiveness.
