iOS 15 Software Update Settings Changes

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a notable shift to the Software Update settings page by providing users with the flexibility to choose between two update paths instead of forcing an immediate major operating system upgrade. Rather than mandating an instant transition to the new generation of iOS, the updated interface allowed users to stay on iOS 14 to receive critical security patches or opt into iOS 15 whenever they felt ready. This article outlines the specific layout adjustments, the dual-tier update system, and how the update interface functioned in iOS 15.

The Dual-Track Update Path

Prior to iOS 15, navigating to Settings > General > Software Update immediately pushed the next major operating system version as the only update path available. With iOS 15, Apple restructured this screen to present two separate update tiers:

  1. Incremental Security Updates: Users running iOS 14 were able to continue receiving important security fixes (such as iOS 14.8) directly at the top of the update screen without installing the feature-heavy iOS 15 upgrade.
  2. Major Feature Upgrades: The option to upgrade to iOS 15 was separated into an entirely distinct section, framed as an optional feature release rather than an urgent requirement.

Interface and Layout Reorganization

To accommodate this dual-track system, the visual structure of the Software Update screen was redesigned:

  • Primary Update Placement: If a point update or security patch was available for the current release branch, it appeared in the traditional update spot near the center of the page, complete with release notes, file size, and the "Download and Install" button.
  • Secondary Upgrade Section: At the very bottom of the screen, Apple placed a dedicated panel titled "Also Available" featuring an "Upgrade to iOS 15" button. This clearly delineated standard maintenance updates from a full operating system upgrade.
  • Streamlined Update Information: When a user tapped into the upgrade section at the bottom, a secondary detail view opened to display the full feature list and terms for iOS 15 before initiating the download.

Automatic Updates Behavior

The "Automatic Updates" menu also adapted to this configuration. Users could toggle automatic downloads and installations specifically for maintenance and security patches without inadvertently triggering the full iOS 15 upgrade in the background. This provided greater control for users who prefer to wait until early-release software bugs are resolved before committing to a major platform shift.
