iOS 15 Smart Stack Widget Placement Updates

Apple introduced significant refinements to Home Screen Smart Stacks in iOS 15, enhancing how users organize and interact with multiple widgets in a single space. These updates focused primarily on contextual intelligence and customization, bringing automated Widget Suggestions, improved Smart Rotate capabilities, and streamlined stack management controls directly to the Home Screen.

Widget Suggestions

The most notable addition to Smart Stacks in iOS 15 was the "Widget Suggestions" feature. When enabled, iOS automatically surfaces a relevant widget inside an existing Smart Stack based on past user behavior, current location, or the time of day.

  • Contextual Delivery: For example, a music widget might automatically appear during a regular workout time, or the Maps widget might surface before a daily commute.
  • Direct Control: If a suggested widget appears, users can tap a plus icon directly on the widget to permanently keep it in the stack, or dismiss it with a single tap.

Improved Smart Rotate Intelligence

While Smart Rotate originated in iOS 14, iOS 15 upgraded its underlying intelligence using advanced on-device machine learning. The system analyzes user routines more accurately to rotate the most relevant widget to the top of the stack when needed, reducing the need for manual swiping.

Streamlined Stack Management

iOS 15 made editing and configuring Smart Stacks faster directly from the Home Screen:

  • Dedicated Toggles: Long-pressing a Smart Stack and selecting "Edit Stack" reveals distinct toggles for both "Smart Rotate" and "Widget Suggestions," allowing users to decide whether they want predictive behavior or a purely manual carousel.
  • Easy Reordering: Users can drag and drop widgets within the edit screen to change their manual scroll order without having to rebuild the stack.
  • Quick Removal: Individual widgets can be deleted from the stack immediately within the same menu using a dedicated minus button.

Focus Mode Integration

Smart Stacks also benefited from the system-wide introduction of Focus modes in iOS 15. Users gained the ability to assign dedicated Home Screen pages to specific Focus states—such as Work, Personal, or Sleep. This enabled placing distinct Smart Stacks tailored to specific activities, ensuring only context-appropriate widgets appear throughout the day.
