iOS 15 Smart Stack Customization Tools

Apple's iOS 15 introduced meaningful upgrades to Home screen customization by refining how Smart Stacks operate. Through the addition of Widget Suggestions, enhanced editing interfaces, and direct drag-and-drop management, users gained greater control over the content, ordering, and behavioral automation of their stacked widgets.

Widget Suggestions

The most prominent feature added in iOS 15 was Widget Suggestions. When enabled, your Smart Stack automatically surfaces widgets from apps you already use, even if you have not manually added them to the stack.

  • Contextual Delivery: The system uses on-device intelligence to suggest a widget based on your past activity, time of day, location, or current Focus mode.
  • Direct Addition: When a suggested widget appears, a small plus (+) button allows you to permanently keep it in the stack without needing to rebuild the stack from scratch.

In-Stack Reordering

Prior to iOS 15, changing the order of items inside a Smart Stack was clunky. iOS 15 introduced a streamlined layout in the "Edit Stack" menu:

  • Long-pressing a Smart Stack and selecting Edit Stack opens a vertical card view displaying every active widget.
  • Users can tap, hold, and drag the grabber handles on each widget card to rearrange the scrolling sequence manually.

Dedicated Automation Toggles

The stack editing interface added discrete toggle controls located directly below the list of stacked widgets:

  • Smart Rotate: Allows iOS to automatically cycle through the widgets throughout the day based on relevance. Turning this off locks the stack into a manual carousel while keeping the widgets grouped together.
  • Widget Suggestions: Allows users to independently disable or enable algorithmic recommendations without affecting the standard Smart Rotate functionality.

Drag-and-Drop Stack Creation

iOS 15 made building custom stacks more intuitive directly on the Home screen. While in "Jiggle Mode" (Edit Home Screen), users can simply drag an existing widget on top of another widget of the identical size to instantly generate a Smart Stack, allowing quick organization without starting through the Widget Gallery menu.
