iOS 15 Shortcut Automation Triggers Updates
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced significant enhancements to personal automations within the Shortcuts app, focusing on background execution and deeper system integration. These updates addressed long-standing user complaints regarding automation friction, primarily by expanding completely hands-free triggers, integrating the new Focus modes, and allowing users to silence execution notifications.
Focus Mode Integration
One of the most notable trigger additions in iOS 15 was the direct integration with Apple's new Focus modes. Replacing the previous, limited "Do Not Disturb" triggers, users could now set automations to trigger based on the activation or deactivation of specific Focus profiles—such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or custom user-defined modes. This allowed devices to automatically launch apps, adjust settings, or send messages when a specific mode engaged.
"Notify When Run" Toggle
Prior to iOS 15, even if an automation ran automatically, iOS would post a banner notification every single time a trigger executed. iOS 15 introduced a "Notify When Run" toggle alongside the existing "Ask Before Running" setting. Turning this toggle off allowed automations to run completely silently in the background without cluttering the Notification Center or alerting the user.
Expanded Background Triggers
Apple expanded the list of triggers capable of running without requiring a manual confirmation prompt. Triggers such as NFC, Message, and App open/close workflows became more reliable for true background execution, reducing the need for users to tap a notification to confirm that an automation should proceed.
Cross-Platform Automation Syncing
Alongside the iOS 15 update and the introduction of Shortcuts to macOS Monterey, automation triggers benefited from improved iCloud syncing. Triggers and personal automations synced more reliably across the Apple ecosystem, ensuring consistent behavior when shared triggers or paired HomeKit conditions were met across multiple devices.
