iOS 15 Screen Recording Control Layout Changes

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced subtle yet practical visual and functional adjustments to the screen recording control options in the Control Center. This article covers the redesigned long-press broadcast sheet, the repositioning of app destinations, the updated microphone toggle, and the integration of native screen sharing features such as SharePlay.

Redesigned Broadcast Sheet Layout

When long-pressing or using Haptic Touch on the Screen Recording button in the Control Center, iOS 15 replaced the older, full-screen overlay with an updated floating card sheet. This modal sheet matches the modern design language of iOS 15, featuring softer rounded corners, compact system fonts, and a native blurred backdrop that leaves the surrounding Control Center partially visible.

Streamlined Destination List

The central section of the long-press menu displays the available destination apps for the capture feed, such as the Camera Roll (Photos) or third-party streaming services (e.g., Zoom, Twitch, Messenger). In iOS 15, this list received the following layout updates:

  • Compact App Row Spacing: The list of supported broadcast destinations features tighter vertical padding, reducing unnecessary scrolling.
  • Refined Selection Indicators: The checkmark indicator next to the active destination was adjusted to align more clearly with system-wide iOS radio-button designs.
  • Dynamic App Detection: Supported streaming and screen-sharing applications populate dynamically at the top level without requiring secondary menus.

Relocated Microphone Audio Toggle

The "Microphone Audio" control remained anchored at the bottom of the interface, but its visual container and hit-box were updated. In iOS 15, the circular microphone icon sits cleanly below the "Start Broadcast" / "Start Recording" button with an increased touch-target area. The toggle state features a more distinct red fill color when active, providing clearer visual confirmation that external audio is being captured alongside system sound.

Integration with SharePlay and FaceTime

iOS 15 introduced SharePlay, directly altering how the screen recording interface functions during calls. When active in a FaceTime session, the layout adjusts to show FaceTime as an immediate sharing target, allowing users to start sharing their display directly from the Control Center recording menu with fewer confirmation prompts.
