iOS 15 Safari Search Bar and Layout Changes

Apple introduced a major redesign to Safari in iOS 15, fundamentally altering how users interact with the web browser's search and address tools. The update prioritized one-handed usability and modern gesture controls, most notably moving the unified search and address bar to the bottom of the screen. This article details the specific layout changes made to Safari’s search tool on iOS 15, the new interaction options introduced, and how users can customize the interface.

The most prominent change in iOS 15 is the relocation of the unified Smart Search field from the top of the display to the bottom. Designed as a floating tab bar, this new placement positions search inputs and website URLs within easy reach of the user's thumb, significantly improving one-handed operation on larger iPhone displays.

As you scroll down a webpage, the bottom search bar minimizes to maximize viewable content. Tapping the bottom bar or scrolling upward restores it to full size.

Gesture-Based Tab Switching

With the search bar anchored at the bottom, Apple added horizontal swipe gestures directly to the search tool layout:

  • Swipe Left or Right: Swiping across the address bar allows you to quickly cycle through open tabs without opening the tab switcher.
  • Swipe to Open New Tab: Swiping left on the final open tab instantly generates a new, blank tab with the search bar ready for input.

The search bar layout gained a dedicated microphone icon directly inside the text field. Tapping this icon instantly initiates dictation, allowing users to perform web searches or dictate website addresses without bringing up the on-screen keyboard.

Pull to Refresh

Rather than relying solely on a small reload button within the address bar, iOS 15 introduced a pull-to-refresh gesture. Users can pull down from the top of any web page to reload it, streamlining how page updates are handled alongside the minimized bottom bar.

Redesigned Tab Grid and Tab Groups

Tapping the tab button in the search toolbar reveals a redesigned grid layout for open tabs, replacing the long-standing 3D cascading card view. Within this layout, Apple integrated Tab Groups, which let users organize, label, and save collections of tabs that sync across Apple devices.

Following user feedback during the iOS 15 beta, Apple included an option to restore the classic layout. Users can return the search bar to the top of the screen either by tapping the "aA" (Page Settings) button in the search bar and selecting "Show Top Address Bar," or by navigating to Settings > Safari > Tabs and selecting Single Tab instead of Tab Bar.
