iOS 15 Safari Address Bar Position Settings

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a major redesign to Safari by moving the default address bar from the top of the screen to the bottom. In response to user feedback during the beta testing phase, Apple added dedicated layout settings that allow users to choose between the new bottom "Tab Bar" view and the classic "Single Tab" top position. This update gave users full control over their mobile browsing experience, accommodating both one-handed navigation and traditional web browsing preferences.

The Shift to the Bottom Address Bar

Apple moved the Smart Search field to the bottom of the screen to make Safari easier to use with one hand on larger iPhone screens. In this bottom configuration, officially called the Tab Bar, the address bar floats above the content and allows users to swipe left or right directly on the bar to switch between open tabs. Swiping up on the bar reveals the tab grid view.

How Apple Allows Users to Switch Positions

Following widespread user feedback, Apple provided two straightforward methods to toggle between the bottom and top layouts without forcing users into a single interface.

1. Directly in Safari

Users can toggle the layout instantly without leaving the browser:

  • Tap the aA (Page Settings) icon on the left side of the address bar.
  • Select Show Top Address Bar to switch to the classic position, or Show Bottom Tab Bar to return to the iOS 15 layout.

2. In the iOS Settings App

Users can also manage the setting permanently through system preferences:

  • Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
  • Scroll down and select Safari.
  • Scroll to the Tabs section.
  • Choose between Tab Bar (bottom layout) or Single Tab (classic top layout).

Landscape Tab Bar Settings

Along with the vertical orientation changes, iOS 15 introduced a Landscape Tab Bar toggle within Safari settings. When enabled, rotating the iPhone into landscape mode reveals a Mac-style horizontal tab strip across the top of the screen, allowing users to see and select all active tabs directly. When disabled, the landscape interface remains minimal without the row of open tabs.
