iOS 15 Podcasts App Playback Control Changes

Apple made several notable design and functional adjustments to the Podcasts app playback controls in iOS 15, focusing on a more streamlined Now Playing screen. These updates relocated key audio tools—such as playback speed adjustments and the sleep timer—directly onto the main interface to reduce clutter and eliminate unnecessary menu navigation.

Direct Access to Playback Speed

In earlier versions, altering audio speed required users to dig into submenus or swipe through extended player panels. With iOS 15, Apple positioned the playback speed button directly on the primary Now Playing card. Tapping this button allows listeners to cycle instantly through speed presets, including 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, and 2x, without disrupting audio playback.

Integrated Sleep Timer

The sleep timer control was moved to a more prominent location on the Now Playing screen. Instead of requiring users to scroll down through episode descriptions, the sleep timer icon sits conveniently alongside the primary playback options. This gives quick access to predefined intervals, such as 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, one hour, or the end of the current episode.

Streamlined AirPlay and Output Selection

The AirPlay route selector was repositioned directly below the central scrub bar. This change ensures that switching between iPhone speakers, AirPods, and external AirPlay-compatible devices can be accomplished with a single tap from the main card.

Reorganized Central Transport Controls

The core transport controls—consisting of the central Play/Pause button flanked by the Skip Backward and Skip Forward buttons—received slight spacing adjustments to prevent accidental taps. The progress scrubber remained anchored above the transport buttons, offering smoother scrubbing and clear visual markers for elapsed and remaining time.

Simplified Up Next Queue Access

Accessing the "Up Next" queue and chapter markers was streamlined into a dedicated list button on the player interface. Rather than an ambiguous swipe gesture, tapping this icon opens the upcoming episode list and chapter breakdown, making queue management straightforward and predictable.
